Maltese are mostly of western Sicilian descent -- Palermo, Caltanissetta, Agrigento. This is going by their surnames and the fact that they speak the Maltese language, which originated in western Sicily.

Most Maltese surnames are Sicilian -- Vella, Spiteri, Camilleri, Conti, Vassallo, Attard, Falzon, Farrugia, etc
