In any event, there are a number of organizations that assess political freedom globally.

Descriptions of the US and UK are identical using language like 'free', 'mostly free', 'satisfactory situation', and 'full democracy'.

Russia on the other hand scores the same as Communist Vietnam, and worse than Turkey, Venezuela, and Uganda with descriptions like 'not free', 'mostly not free', 'difficult situation', and 'authoritarian'.

The Putinist regime stays in power mostly by keeping real opposition off the ballot (the by now infamous 'Kremlin approved' cliche) and giving massively slanted press coverage to the ruling clique in state run media.

Not one electoral commission that would include ordinary people instead of dependents. Still, the situation has improved somewhat due to the tons of supervisors. For example, our local psychiatric ward UIK 3351 used to have 86.51% United Russia, and now it's just 74.93% Putin.

Below is the distribution of votes by UIK in Moscow, sorted by UIK number. State institutions like psychiatric wards, nursery homes, prisons, etc. are numbered 3XXX, though there are exceptions: Putin spikes outside the 3XXX area overwhelmingly coincide with such exceptions (as shown above).

The total votes for Moscow are as follows:

Somewhat amusingly, Putin's result is identical to United Russia's result in Moscow: 46.5%. The distribution of votes is much less anomalous though, with fewer areas having odd turnouts and 60%+ votes for the ruling party:

I suppose it's needless to further comment about the "turnout" of 99.61% with 99.76% "votes" for Putin in Chechnya and the likes, but I'll have a closer look at this later on.

Popular does not necessarily translate to well liked, though. I believe there is plenty of evidence (much of it posted by Humanophage) that points to massive voter fraud.

Even if there was voter fraud, it is very unlikely it would have tipped any of Putin's contenders to win the election.

I really don't mind Putin's authoritarianism that much. Some cultures just aren't ready for true democracy. In fact too much democracy can become just as bad as a dictatorship at times.

But he really does need to crack down on immigration, stop supporting Islamist regimes, and think about joining the EU and not creating his Eurasian Union.
