Geddy Lee, without a doubt! I've always found the bass work in Freewill especially great.

Brother, these Americans are shopkeeper souls stinking to heaven. Dead for all spiritual life, totally dead. The nightingale is right that it does not come to these wretched existences. To me it is of serious, deeper meaning that America has no nightingale at all. To me it seems to be poetic justice. A Niagara voice is necessary to preach to these crooks that there are higher Gods than those coined in the mints."

Interestingly enough, I've recently begun playing bass A LOT. Something about it has possessed me. There is a plethora of bassists that I've admired over the years, but for the sake of brevity, I'll stick to the guys that have been influencing me lately.

Cliff Burton- he was taken too soon, but I'll always maintain my recollection of standing right in front of him performing "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" at a tiny club in my hometown on the Ride the Lightning tour. Unfortunately, the production on the first three MetallicA albums leaves a lot to be desired as far as hearing the bass frequencies goes, but at each listen I always manage to hear some new nugget of psychedelic metal bass wizardry that he pulled off. The first thing that I did when a bass appeared at my house was to learn Anesthesia and the bass sections of "Orion". A true innovator, R.I.P. Cliff.

Paul McCartney- The godfather of modern rock bass. He actually managed to make a Hofner look cool (but I prefer the Ric). Without Paul, modern bass playing would be set back at least 20 years. Pure genius.

Terry "Geezer" Butler- Beautiful sludge that rode Tony's riffs without slavishly aping them. Geezer really knew when to support the riff and when to step out from behind it. Plus, his (too few) recorded solos and tone were way ahead of their time.

Geddy-Some might bitch because I've included such a proud Jew, but the man is a bass god. How he manages to sing while pulling off those lines confounds me.

Berry Oakley-just listen to the fabulous tone he musters in "Mountain Jam". Another supportive player who knew how to straddle the line between playing the song and stepping out. Another one who left us much too early. R.I.P.

John Paul Jones- Perfect basslines and perfect tone. What do you need to say?

Jaco Pastorius-besides originally being a Pennsylvania boy, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has yet matched his technique. Unfortunately he was beaten to death outside of his brownstone before we got to hear what he was truly capable of. R.I.P.

Edit: I have to take a moment and add Steve Harris, most bassists would kill for his right hand.

I could probably go on like this forever, but I've got to stop for now.
