The Republic of Macedonia is a small country situated in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It abounds in natural beauties and rarities. Many have named “The Pearl of the Balkans”. Attractive lakes, mountains and spas are the distinctive features of this country.
The main tourist resorts are located around the three lakes of Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran, which are the best tourist attractions. Popova Shapka, Mavrovo, Krusevo and Pelister are attractive winter sports and recreation centres. Macedonian spas- Katlanovska, Negorska, Debarska and Bansko are well know for their medicinal and recreational qualities.
The climate is moderately continental (in the north) and Mediterranean (in the south).
The Republic of Macedonia is ecologically clean. The three national parks; Mavrovo, Pelister and Galicica offer good conditions for pleasant recreation.
The country has a good public transport system. The air traffic operates through the two international airports at Skopje and Ohrid. The railway and the road network is in good condition.
The cultural map is exceptionally rich and varied. The cultural heritage is testified by valuable archaeological sites, large number of churches and monasteries with their icons, frescoes and woodcarvings, as well as by mosques, baths, caravanserais and other examples of Islamic buildings. Several international cultural events and festivals are held each year – Ohrid Summer Festival (July, August) Balkan Folklore Festival (July), Struga Poetry Evenings (August).
National folklore and traditional arts and crafts are still cherished (Galicnik Wedding). The old town and village architecture is still attractive for tourists.
Macedonian cuisine abounds in well-know national and regional specialties, as well as good wines.
