Barack Obama has vowed to keep US military dominance in the world by sending military troops to 'theater of war' when and where Washington deems 'necessary'.

"We will maintain America's military dominance and keep you the finest fighting force the world has ever seen," President Obama told graduates at the US Naval Academy on Friday.

The president's remarks came ahead of Monday's Memorial Day, a national holiday for paying tribute to those who gave their lives in the service of the country.

"We have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us," Obama said in his weekly radio address on Saturday.

He said he would send "servicemen and women into harm's way only when it is necessary, and ensure that they have the training and equipment they need when they enter the theater of war."

Obama also expressed regret that over recent years and decades, America had sometimes failed to give its veterans the support they need and respect they deserve.

More than 1.5 million US troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan from the outset of Washington's so-called war on terror in 2001.

The wars have claimed the lives of over 5,000 American troops during the past eight years.

According to a fact-based report published by The Washington Post on Sunday, over 20% of the US combat forces in the war zones return home psychologically damaged.

The soldiers mostly suffer from major depression and long periods of combat-related stress, and show severe symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the report said.

I do wonder - will this mean the "patriotards" will support Obama now? He supports a strong national defense! He's not bad after all!

He may recover the support of hawkish liberals who supported President Bush's foreign policy goals. "Neo-conservatives", Wilsonians etc. could find their way back into the democratic fold.
