    I don't consider it ironic, though, incidentally, I also don't view Turkey as a natural enemy to western interests anyway.

    No, they wanted to become part of the EU. The Turkish people has never supported this sentiment and the political elite has realized that they won't benefit of it.

    Turkey is becoming a real strong power again on its own and it actually doesn't need the EU ... the EU needs its support more to act as a barrier against more extreme forms of Islam to the south.

    That's why I suggested Turkey should join the EU. There are rivalries between the Turks and a few European nations, but Turkey is going to become an economic powerhouse in the near future. Europe needs that.
