In England the Irish formed ethnic enclaves, the Welsh did too to a smaller extent.
The Protestant ones assimilated quickly, the Catholics usually assimilated by marriage to lower class English and worked their way up from there.
Once most people became secular it didn't matter so much.The Irish are generally well liked, once they loose their accents they become indistinguishable from the English.
