The best Russian films for me are the historical ones, especially those made from the 1930s to 1950s. Although I don't know of anything interesting they've made recently, the Russians used to make brilliant films. They took a realistic but also artistic approach to the films. The stories don't consist of the usual, modern Hollywood trash of gun-slinging, gratuitous sex, or perverted madness (see American Beauty), but are uplifting and convey positive messages. The films often contain positive heroes, not the sociopaths and creeps that are often the subject of Hollywood films.

Quiet Flows the Don/Тихий Дон is an epic about the revolution. It's comparable to Gone with the Wind.
