Alphabets in Europe

Currently in Europe we are using three different alphabets.

Greek:

The use of the Greek alphabet world wide:

• Coptic (see above).
• Turkish spoken by Orthodox Christians (Karamanlides) was often written in Greek script, and called Karamanlidika.
• Tosk Albanian was often written using the Greek alphabet, starting in about 1500 (Elsie, 1991). The printing press at Moschopolis published several Albanian texts in Greek script during the 18th century. It was only in 1908 that the Monastir conference standardized a Latin orthography for both Tosk and Gheg. The Greek-based Arvanitic alphabet is now only used in Greece.
• Various South Slavic dialects, similar to the modern Bulgarian and Macedonian languages, have been written in Greek script. The modern South Slavic languages now use modified Cyrillic alphabets.[6]
• Aromanian (Vlach) has been written in Greek characters. There is not yet a standardized orthography for Aromanian, but it appears that one based on the Romanian orthography will be adopted.
• Gagauz, a Turkic language of the northeast Balkans.
• Surguch, a Turkic language spoken by a small group of Orthodox Christians in northern Greece.
• Urum or Greek Tatar.

The Estonian alphabet:

The Estonian alphabet is used for writing the Estonian language and is based on the Latin alphabet, with German influence. As such, the Estonian alphabet has the letters A-umlaut (Ä), O-umlaut (Ö) and U-umlaut (Ü), which stand for the vowels [æ], [ø] and [y], respectively. Unlike the German umlauts, they are considered to be separate letters and part of the alphabet, and are alphabetized as separate letters. The most distinguishing letter in the Estonian alphabet, however, is O-tilde or Õ, which was added to the alphabet in the 19th century by Otto Wilhelm Masing and stands for the vowel [ɤ]. In addition, the alphabet also differs from the Latin alphabet by the addition of the letters S-caron (Š) and Z-caron (Ž), and by the position of Z in the alphabet: it has been moved from the end to between S and T (or Š and Ž).

The full alphabet consists of the following 32 letters:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, Š, Z, Ž, T, U, V, W, Õ, Ä, Ö, Ü, X, Y

The oblique letters are so-called "foreign letters" (võõrtähed). F, Š, Z and Ž occur only in loanwords and foreign proper names. C, Q, W, X and Y do not occur in Estonian words, but are used in writing foreign proper names.

Depending on where you set your boundaries, in addition to the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabets, there are Armenian and Georgian, which are used as national scripts. Furthermore, the European Jews use the Hebrew alphabet to write Yiddish.

Many Pagans have harkened back to their pre-Christian roots and use runic alphabets for ceremonial purposes, such as the Futhark alphabet amongst Germanics and the Ogham alphabet amongst Celts. But, I would not go so far to say they are in current use.

Sadly, due to the influx of non-Europeans, many other scripts are now routinely seen in Europe.
