That's a good point, Neon Knight. Along the same lines, vikings fought with Brian Boru against other vikings and their Gaelic allies. These kinds of alliances were not as rare as many people think. Just look at the Gaelic/Norman alliances formed against other Gaelic/Norman alliances.

The Normans were my favorite warriors in British History but terrible politicians.

To get back to the original thread question, if we can agree that a) Jutland Denmark is the Germanic/Teutonic centre and b) the English are half Germanic then we can do this on a genetic map of Europe:



It gives us a rough idea of who is Germanic, semi-Germanic and non-Germanic (genetically speaking).

We had this discussion yesterday in the chatbox, so I thought it is worth a poll and a thread.

I'm going to say Irish.

There is another anthro-myth, especially among Germanophiles, that Dark Age Teutonic and Celtic peoples hated each other and never cooperated. This is simply not true. King Alfred of Wessex had a cosmopolitan outlook, employing Welsh monks and horse-riding messengers and the Vikings usually went native and mixed in wherever they settled.

Celts and Germanics co-operated just as often as they fought each other. Welsh and Cornish allied with Danes many times to attempt to win back lands from the Anglo-Saxons.

What about the Lowlands of Scotland? Are they Norse-Saxon or more Celt or a mix of the three? Yes but despite being in Ireland culturally Celtic the Norse had to have left somewhat of an impact on Ireland. I disagree with Brian Sykes assessment that Ireland is purely Celtic. It would be mostly but not entirely.

South East Scotland (Lothian, Scottish borders) is probably more Germanic. The South West (Dumfries and Galloway) more Celtic.

Why would it be exaggerated? From my knowledge of the subject I think a lot of the Vikings that went to Iceland were from Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland. They appear to have lived a few generations in Ireland and the Western Isles and had Gaelic mothers and wives. The Irish already knew of Iceland as monks lived there. The Icelandic Sagas seem to support this as well. I don't think it is a controversial subject. I remember reading of a group of people from the Legion of Mary going to Iceland in the past and the Icelandic people calling them their Irish cousins. What's so exotic about having Gaelic ancestry anyway? Why would scientists want to exaggerate the Irish/Scottish contribution to Iceland? It would be more "exotic" if they had Inuit ancestry.

Apparently the Inuit were spotted off the coasts of Shetland and Orkney during the little ice age!
