Respectfully, but I have to disagree with your premise: that life's only purpose is life itself.
That conclusion can only seem logical when reality is known partially. Life itself is not an aim neither a goal. It's a path not a destination.
The goal itself is a lot more noble, it's nothing less than conquering the forces that make life possible. In other words it is the pursuit of the truth, reality or whatever else you call the ultimate state of affairs.
Your assumption that consciousness evolves is correct, but understanding how to apply that consciousness to be most beneficial is what really counts. There is task no more important than evolving and ennobling the mind.
Pursuit of the pleasant and the flight from the unpleasant will get you nowhere.
Gaining wisdom and applying it to understand reality is all that really counts.
