Was there flemish settlement in Sao Miguel?

I don't know if it was in São Miguel but yes there were Dutch settlements in the Azores. I will have to find out in which islands. I'm sorry Tuan but I can't do that now. I'll search for it later. There were also French settlements of people from Brittany and from those at least one was in the northwestern shores of São Miguel there are even place names referred to Brittany as Bretanha.

Indeed. I'd say that all the azoreans living in the central group, particularly those in the "triangle" (Faial, Pico, São Jorge) have at least some flemish blood in them. There are also several family names with flemish origin, mine being one of them.

I have met people with the surnames St. Pierre, Goulart, Bettencourt, and Dumont who came from Sao Miguel.

But I would wonder if these surnames rather than Flemish have a Walloon origin.

It can sometimes be hard to pin-point with certainty their origin, but according to the link that I posted above, Bettencourt is french and has it's origins in a family that arrived from Picardie. Their descendants are particularly numerous in the island of Terceira.

Goulart is flemish I think having it´s origins in Van Gaert.

Regarding the other two I really can't say for certain
