All of the top 10 are in Latin America.

Mexico claims the unfortunate dishonor of having five of the top 10 most violent cities in the world, according to a study published by the Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad Pública y la Justicia Penal (Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice), a private organization and wing of COPARMEX, the Mexican Employers' Association.

The rankings come as little surprise, given the rash of violence associated with Mexico's war on drugs. El Periódico de Catalunya reports that on Thursday a group of hitmen allegedly murdered a man outside of an elementary school as classes let out in front of dozens of parents and teachers in Ciudad Juárez, the No. 2 most-violent city.

La Crónica de Hoy notes that of the 50 most violent cities, 12 are in Mexico; 14 in Brazil; five in Colombia; 45 in the Americas and 40 in Latin America. And while Mexico holds down five of the top 10 spots, San Pedro Sula, Honduras, takes the bitter cake in the top spot, with 159 murders per 100,000 people, according to CNN Mexico. The U.S.'s most violent city is New Orleans, coming in at No. 21 on the list, with Detroit, St. Louis and Baltimore also making the top 50.

Not long ago Mexico was once the crown jewel of Latin America. Admired, envied, with a rich history and cultural heritage, beautiful and decent population, one of the world’s top travel destination, world renowned cuisine, growing economy at the brink of becoming an economical powerhouse, the Hollywood of Latin America. Sad it has come to this, the casualty of an unending drug war.

Americans used to head down to Mexico all the time back in the 70s, 80s and 90s and never felt in any danger. I hope they can end the drug violence someday. Decriminalizing some drugs in America and sealing off the border are things the US could do to help.

I really don't see how. The two options you gave will never happen IMO. They already sealed off the border to some extent, doesn't work. Weed maybe, coke never.

I simply don't understand that people think that they can ban substances for which there exists a market. I would think that alcohol has given people a nice example of what happens when you do and now the "war on drugs" has become an even bigger clusterfuck.

I think of drug abuse is a social illness but social illnesses are not dealt with by banning substances, wasting huge sums of money, curtailing civil liberties and incarcerating vast amounts of people for no crime other then possessing or using a certain substance.

If anything governments should learn to be smarter: have it sold like by a kind of Systembolaget and tax it and spend that money on prevention programs, needle exchange programs and self-help organisations.

Yes, crime statistics are not accurate in much of Africa. South Africa does a little better job in keeping crime statistics, and they show Cape Town is more violent than Detroit, and that's the most civilized city in Africa. Imagine what the crime rate is in Kinshasa or Mogadishu.

Seeing as how the lowly negroid had no written language before the white man showed up in Africa, I don't see these animals keeping accurate statistics about violent negroid crime.
