I'm not trying to speak for everyone of course but that was the stereotype in the US based on our not so flattering portrayal of the russian women in the media (movies, commercials, jokes). I'm surprised this is new to you. It's not at all correct but that was the stereotype, especially in the 80's towards the end of the cold war.
