Different kind of beauty. Can appreciate both.


Edinburgh is the skyline of Medieval to Victorian era and the hills. Built to be special, when the Empire was all powerful.

New York is the Skyline of the Skyscraper city & twentieth century economic power.( Haven't been to the US though, only from pictures or King Kong. )

I had never realised that Edinburgh is so beautiful. How could anyone who lived there ever bear to leave it ?

The only city in England that competes on the European scale as Edinburgh does is Bath in Somerset.

I left Edinburgh without yearning to return because it was too large and impersonal for me, standards of public behaviour were not quite adequate, and the amenities and places of interest were too far apart, and not quite in walking distance from each other for me to enjoy them as much as I wanted to. As in London, when I lived in Edinburgh, I lived in a mental "bubble" and within a small area of the city that I felt had a sense of community.

Doesn't seem that large to me but I have lived in places like San Francisco. I suppose compared to US cities all cities in Europe are a bit less chaotic and unhinged without as much human filth. Edinburgh feels quaint to me but pretty epic.
