A science teacher is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting one student and bashing two others during a frenzied attack in front of a horrified class.
Paramedics were called to the All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield, near Nottingham in England’s north yesterday to find 14-year-old Jack Waterhouse unconscious in a pool of blood at the entrance to the science room.
Terrified fellow students described how their teacher Peter Harvey, 49, allegedly bashed the student in the head with a weight used in science experiments after a disagreement during the 11am class.
"He just snapped," said one.
The boy was taken to the local hospital but his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to a specialist head injury unit at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
Another boy and a girl, both 14 and in Jack Waterhouse’s Year 9 class, were recovering at home today after allegedly going to his aid and being assaulted during the same incident. They did not need hospital treatment.
Police sealed off the blood-spattered classroom and arrested the teacher who was last night being spoken to.
Detectives have until tomorrow night to charge him.
They confirmed he faced attempted murder as well as two assault charges.
A team of 12 officers yesterday began questioning all those in the class with their parents present.
The Waterhouse parents were also speaking to police and agreed to release a picture of their son due to overwhelming interest in the issue.
Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson said the school had a very high reputation and the incident had surprised many.
"Obviously the whole class is traumatised by what has happened," he said.
"People send their children here from great distances because of its academic record and what happened is very much out of character for the school."
Sup Pearson said a number of parents have rung the principal to express their horror but the officer appealed for "calm".
"The school, the teachers and the parents are absolutely shocked. It was a trauma to all those involved." he said.
"It was a full, lively classroom and I can understand the trauma to all the staff. Something like this is very, very rare and it's important to get to the truth of what has happened."
One 27-year-old father said last night: "It's a massive shock and very sad because if there is something wrong with the teacher, it cannot be totally his fault."
It's an unfortunate incident in which the teacher suddenly lost it. However, he has no excuse - no matter what the disagreement - for acting upon his anger in such an aggressive manner! He is supposed to provide a safe environment and uphold a code of conduct for his students to learn.
