I do not think that religion has much to do with it but I am not saying that it does not have to do at all. For example if we take Croats and Serbs in consideration from the beginning we can see that Croats came from White Croats while Serbs came from White Serbs. However it has been noted that part of Serbian (and Bosnian and Herzegovina too ) ethnogenesis also includes romanized Thracians, Illyrians, Greeks ( which is the reason why Serbia and B&H as a whole, Montenegro, Macedonia... have elevated frequencies of EV-13 and J) when compared to Croats and the same could be said if we are going to make a comparison between them each.
Over the centuries each South Slavic country has developed it's own culture and each country was to some extent influenced by its neighboroughs whether cultural or genetic which makes each country distinct despite many similarities like language for example.

The Bulgarian concept of ethnos and nation was always rather strongly fixated on language. That's why we can never accept the Macedonians as something different than WEstern Bulgarians. And that's why from our point of view Serbs, Croats, Bosnians and Montenegrins look like one people devided by religion. I understand that you had historical polities of your own, though, even from the start, so I respect your wish to be separate nations.

Don't be offended but Macedonians belong to Serbian orthodox church what's proof that they're one Serbian tribe no some Slavicized Turkic people called Bulgarians.

I don't see a problem with existance of the different ethnicities.....and don't think that should be discussed as much.........for what is only important is how we manage to get along with each others.....
Respect towards the first neighbour is something South Slavs (maybe the whole Balkans) still need to learn .
