I read a little bit about it not too long ago, basically spelled the end of highland clan society. After that is when many of them started emigrating and coming to America.

The British soldiers were merciless, killing every wounded clansman that moved, and afterward went on a spree of reaving, pillaging, rape, and murder up and down the glens. A lot of villages were abandoned and never settled again.

This behavior by the British was motived by the belief that they were basically savage subhumans, and because some clansmen were almost equally brutal to some British soldiers in the last Jacobite rising when Prince Charles came to Scotland. Basically Culloden was considered fair reprisal.

After this battle is also when the period of drafting clansmen into Highland regiments in the British army began.

it had to do with alot of things actually. No doubt alot of the "British" soldiers in the battle were also Lowland Scots Presbyterians
There were a few, small handful of Highland clans who took the side of the government too

But yeah you're right. After this battle, is when the infamous Highland clearances began but that was also, in part , the fault of the Highland chiefs themselves who pushed their own clansmen off of traditional Clan lands to turn them into Hunting estates as well.

Highland dress was outlawed as were the playing of bag-pipes, except for the newly formed Highland regiments, which is one reason so many Scots joined up-to merely be able to practice and celebrate their own culture, if nothing else and try to keep it alive.

    It's sad, actually.

Many of these former clan chiefs soon found that cattle and sheep were more profitable than their own blood (farmers, crafters, and herders) so they simply had them tied up by government constables and taken away from their homes, places they and their families had lived for generations.

But it's funny, not even a few centuries after this battle is when highland imagery, culture, and language began to get romanticised and admired in the south. Their were even textile companies solely dedicated to faking "authentic" calm tatarns for people to display in their homes.
