If I remember correctly the Romans give it that name "Silva Negra" because they were terrified of the place and they just couldn't bash through so they used it as a border.

The Black Forest mountains don´t have "naked" stone peaks like the Alps, but are covered with forest almost everywhere - something you would expect from a hill and not from a mountain. However, from the deep valleys they really look like huge, majestic mountains. Nobody would call them hills when driving through the valley and looking up. These unique mountains, the dark forests and the lack of settlements create a very special atmosphere.

In the few settlements there are many excellent restaurants that serve classic German dishes, but also special dishes like the Black Forest trout, Black Forest ham or Black Forest cherry cakes or blueberry pan cakes.

I strongly suggest visiting the Black Forest once in your lifetime. It is such a great place.

It reminds me of the Scandinavian woodlands and the Canadian wilderness, too. I don´t know about Alberta, but my sister and her husband visited Sweden a few months ago and said that it is very similar to the Black Forest.

The settlements are of course very Germanic (south Germanic), which creates a very unique flair. The Black Forest landscape has a northern touch, but at the same time the combination with Germanic architecture creates a central European fairytale flair.

    It's a great thread

In my formative years probably the main dessert in England was Black Forest Gateau with the cherries though this probably bore little resemblance to the delicacy of the real thing
