If you want to hear really exciting performances of string quartets, allow me to recommend the Dover Quartet, recent winners of a string quartet competition in Banff, BC. When I heard them at Music Mountain last year, they were still all in their late 20's. Some thrilling performances by them are available on YouTube. Their Brahms quartet is especially fine.
