    Default The Evil Eye

It exists in many European cultures, especially along the Mediterranean but I hear also among Catholics in Poland.

How many of you have that in your culture? And does your family have a tradition of it?

My maternal grandfather was a professional hockey player and he always wore a fish amulet under his jersey during games, the fish was for good luck and was supposed to ward off the evil eye. I have the amulet now, when I was in school I wore it during exams, always did me well. But being the rational person that I am now, I'm thinking, no, it was because I studied.

Thumbs up Nazar? Do you believe in it?

    Definition of nazar :

A nazar (Turkish: nazar boncuğu) is an eye-shaped amulet believed to protect against the evil eye ("evil eye", from nazar and "amulet" from boncuğu). The word "nazar" is derived from the Arabic نظر, "sight" or "seeing". In Central Asia, during the ages of Tengrism, people held similar superstitions like horseshoes, garlic, wolf's tooth, dried thorn, lead, stones; but the crystal blue eye has always been the most popular one.

    Some pictures of nazar boncugu:

My dear, I got the answer for you:

Bir hurafenin; “Mavi gözlülerin gözü değer.” Sözünün ve nazar boncuğunun bir sırrı:

Ortasındaki gözün mânâsını belirttik. Peki neden mavidir? Mavidir;çünkü dünya mavidir. Uzaydan da mavi gezegen görülür.Ortasındaki göz: Yeryüzüne indirilmiş Şeytan’ın kıskanç gözüdür.

Hâlâ melekler meclisindedir gözü... Dünyadan bakar.
    http://www.onaltiyildiz.com/haber.php?haber_id=1803

    Translated:

A myth, "Blue-eyed people give the negative energy - evil look." And this is actually the secret of the evil eye beads:

So basically the meaning of the blue coloured eyes is above explained in a very brief way.
But the question is how comes it's the blue colour? Because the earth is in blue colour, if you check the pictures of earth you will see it looks blue. And the eyes in the middle of the amulet is the jealous eye of the satan. He still wants to get into the "parliament" of the angels and he's watching people.

And the picture for the above explanation:

Blue is color of skies and sky has the divine power ( Tengri )
Blue eyed people were also considered having such a power

"Gök gözlü" means sky eyed , people were scared of them
(that comes from my dad -around his neighborehood ,it's a belief among the folk)
That doesn't mean these people are evil, but their sight yields a power may be harmful. These beads distracts the sight on itselves provides a shield .

Honestly this article is soooo good:

    http://blog.milliyet.com.tr/nazar-ve...?BlogNo=308754

But I am not good at translating things, all I can say is, they tested nazar with 4 different group of people and the least powerful group was the group of people who's eyes were tied with a black cloth. After that the group of people who was brown/dark eyed etc.
