I presuppose that everyone here in the section "Ethno-Cultural Discussion" has had some thoughts and views on the subject of ethnicity/ancestry and also on him self.

To these who have done a DNA test:

Did the results influence your views and if so, in what way?

Yes significantly so. Before making DNA test I did not know Croatian people were mostly Slavic genetically. I expected to score Illyrian-Gothic results.
After this huge relevation I became huge Slavophile and it changed my views on many matters completely.

DNA results played giant influence in my development and identity. It completely shaped my views on my ethnic group as well.

    .
These beliefs are not uncommon among Croats in my experience. What is the reason? What is taught in Croatian schools?

Well I just learned we came from north of Carpathians, but textbooks never specified what kind of wider group these Croats belonged to iirc.
Ofc average school age child does not know proto Slavs lived north of Carpathians in early medieval so that was a giveaway clue.

Early genetic researches made by Croatian scientists claimed hg I is native in Balkans and also related to I found in Scandinavia. And that we are native here since ice age.
this was in early 2000s when this whole thing was totally new.

People here also often connect looks to origins. I was taught Slavs are short, blond and round faced, and nobody in my family fits that description.
My dad was considered Balkan looking, and mother Germanic looking. So there you go, Illyrio-Gothic

Not so much ancestry wise, because it just confirmed what I knew. The health reports I found far more interesting and insightful Especially knowing if I had any BRCA 1- 2 mutations and such.

I assumed we were somewhere between Russians/Ukrainians and Greeks, so it's no big surprise.
The surprise was the similarity with Moldovan genetics.

I feel it would have changed, but I already had a pretty solid idea of my ethnic background beforehand. I could understand how it might change if I hadn't as much of an idea about my ethnicity.

I was surprised both by that German genetics are that diverse as they are and by that I could be regionally correctly kind of pinpointed in respect to my ancestry.

My views did not change much, because my views on ethnicity were not dependent on any particular genetic results. And as an ancestry researcher with a long paper trail I well knew my ancestry (which always had a big importance for my identity).

So what did change? I think I'm more conscious about my particular genetic ancestry composition, because before I had no clue how specific that could be. And also I see myself today more into a big scale context, whith these known in European genetic history groups like hunther gatherer, neolithic farmers and steppe pastoralists. This was completely unknown to me before and I must admit, that these things also somewhat do influence my indentity.

You are 40.1% Slavic - what % Slavic did you think / expect you are before DNA test?
