Thumbs up Belgrade, capital city of Serbia

Belgrade (Serbian Cyrillic: Београд, Serbian Latin: Beograd (meaning "White City" in Serbian) (sr-beograd.ogg listen (help·info)) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city lies on two international waterways, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where Central Europe's Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Likewise, the city is placed along the pan-European corridors X and VII.[4] With a population of 1,630,000 (official estimate 2007),[3] Belgrade is the third largest city in Southeastern Europe, after Istanbul and Athens,[5] and largest in Danubian Europe.

One of the oldest cities in Europe, with archeological finds tracing settlements as early as the 6th millennium BC,[6] Belgrade's wider city area was the birthplace of the largest prehistoric culture of Europe, the Vinča culture.[7] A settlement on today's location was founded in 3rd century BC by the Celts who named it the White City, which it still bears.[6] It was awarded city rights by the Romans[8] before it was permanently settled by White Serbs from the 7th century onwards. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times[9] since the ancient period by countless armies of the East and West. In medieval times, it was in the possession of Byzantine, Frankish, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Serbian rulers. In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottomans and became the seat of the Pashaluk of Belgrade, as the principal city of Ottoman Europe[10] and among the largest European cities.[11] Frequently passing from Ottoman to Austrian rule which saw destruction of most of the city, the status of Serbian capital would be regained only in 1841, after the Serbian revolution. Northern Belgrade, though, remained an Austrian outpost until the breakup of Austria-Hungary in 1918. The united city then became the capital of several incarnations of Yugoslavia, up to 2006, when Serbia became an independent state again.

Belgrade has the status of a separate territorial unit in Serbia, with its own autonomous city government.[12] Its territory is divided into 17 municipalities, each having its own local council.[13] It covers 3.6% of the territory of Serbia, and 24% of the country's population lives in the city.[14] Belgrade is the central economic hub of Serbia, and the capital of Serbian culture, education and science.

Excellent post Radojica! Thank you! I loved all the pics, though some I didn't get to see. Sometime could you pick a building or two and tell us what it is and talk about it a bit pls? I think that would be very interesting.

I also love the pic on folkloric dress. What is your music and food like?

Oh and I appreciated seeing a couple of wintertime pics too. What are your winters like in Belgrade usually? Very cold? Much snow? Or only dustings that come and go throughout the season?

Thanks again for the great post!

    Cheers!...Aemma

Belgrade is growing ever more ancient and beautiful and is one of the world's real extant treasures.

The damage done to that city is on a par with the hideous demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas. Luckily those who built the city still dwell there to fix what is broken.

I want to visit Belgrade someday, provided SVAROG gives me his word that he will leave his damned hill for once to show me around!

It truly is a beautiful city though. Hail Srbija!

    Default Avala Tower (Avalski Toranj)

The Avala TV Tower is a 205 m (673 ft) tall telecommunication tower located on Avala mountain near Belgrade, Serbia. It was destroyed in NATO bombardment of Serbia on 29 April 1999. On 21 December 2006, the reconstruction of Avala Tower commenced and was finished on 22 October 2009. It is currently the tallest structure in Serbia and the Balkan region.

Today is the grand re-opening of new-old Avala tower, sniff, sniff

That part of Belgrade called New Belgrade (those buildings particularly) were built during '70th of the 20th century, so it's not surprising at all

One cool picture of New Belgrade with it's West gate in the back.
