Are you Shy or Outgoing?

Used to be terribly shy and it caused major problems for me. But I worked on it and it's better now.

Asperger's Syndrome does not make one popular. Throughout elementary school, I was a sickly child who was picked on during recess periods, mercilessly.

My reaction to physical abuse and unpopularity was to become haughty and arrogant. I used my prodigious vocabulary to excoriate anyone who manifested hostility to me. In my high school yearbook, i am listed as Most Serious, Most Studious, and Most Literary of the class of 1948. Hardly a popular combination.

It did, however, exempt me from peer pressure. I never conformed to peer pressure because I did not acknowledge HAVING any peers. E.g., I refused to attend either football rallies or games and I listened only to classical music.
I made friends only of those who were as odd as I was.

While my classmates were toying with Socialism and even Communism, I was an avowed monarchist. While the other "nonconformists" all non-conformed together in lock-step, I was the REAL non-conformist who stood out from the crowd by my obvious scorn for their tastes.

As I learned to accomodate to the expectations of society, I acquired a superficial veneer of bonhommie, but beneath it, I am the same .

I'm pretty outgoing and personable, or so I've been told. I'm just a little too self-conscience of my appearance.

My profession requires moi to be outgoing. In my private life I prefer solitude. Don't like crowds and live far from the city. Not sure if I'm shy but I sure like the company of animals more than humans!
