    Default Hello!

I'm not sure how I found my way here. I think I followed a link after looking up Anglo Saxon regions of England.
I'd love to understand what all that stuff under my avatar means. Maybe you guys can help me find out my ethnic classification.
My username is my paternal grandmothers maiden name. One of the oldest recorded Saxon surnames. I'm proud of it. :-)

    Welcome to the forum!

Y-DNA is passed down from father to son (so useful genaeologically), and of course passed on by men only (women don't have one).
MT-DNA is passed down from mother to children, and passed on by women only.
Ethnicity in most cases is your ethnic group - So for you either English, British, Anglo-Irish or British-Irish or whatever best describes your ancestry.

You can find out y-DNA, mt-DNA and autosomal DNA (useful for your whole ancestry) from a DNA test, that will put you back about £100.

Is a good name you have there. Good to see someone else using their surname . Mine probably comes from Yorkshire actually.

My nana's surname is an old Yorkshire name, funnily enough.

    Metcalfe.

I'll look into a DNA test. I'm strongly drawn to Germanic/Northern European folklore but interested in family anecdotes about being of 'blood of Irish kings'.
Eldred is not my own surname, but my birth name does come from a Saxon town name, so definitely of Saxon stock on my fathers side!
