    Nikola Jurišić

    Translated from the web
In 1532, Captain Nikola Jurišić defended the small border fort of Kőszeg (Kingdom of Hungary) with only 700-800 Croatian soldiers with no cannons and few guns, preventing the advance of the Turkish army of 120,000-140,000 toward Vienna.

Nikola Jurisic with his 28 easy and 10 heavily armed horsemen should have ridden to Vienna and there to join the main army. However, when he saw a crowd of children, women and old men who had come to seek the salvation of the city walls, he decided to stay and defend the nation. After Jurisic compiled from farmers and citizens a small crew of 800 people, sent a letter to Ferdinand I in which he wrote: "I dared to defend this small and weak city against Turkish forces, not because I am hoping to save him, but only that I bought time and so obtain Christian leaders time to prepare for resistance.

The first three days continuously Turks cannoned Kiseg and 13th August began with numerous assaults from all sides. Defenders were not losing composure even when the Turks several times brought them in matt position, but they defended the city with bravery and wonder.

    Siege of Güns

Located south of Sopron, the small town of Kőszeg was only a few miles from the Austrian border. It was held by a task force commanded by the Croatian soldier and diplomat Nikola Jurišić. Kőszeg was not considered a place of importance. It was an insubstantial obstacle and many stronger places had yielded without a fight. The Grand Vizier of the Ottomans, Ibrahim Pasha, did not realize how poorly defended Kőszeg was. After taking a few minor places, Suleiman came to join Ibrahim Pasha shortly afterwards, when the siege had already started.

The Ottomans met stiff resistance at Kőszeg. Suleiman had hoped that the imperial army would come to relieve Kőszeg, affording him an opportunity for a larger engagement. However, during the Ottoman attacks on Kőszeg, the imperial army still formed up in Regensburg. The Ottomans continued with one attack after another; artillery fire brought down parts of the walls, but brought no surrender. The Ottomans' mines were sapped by countermines. The layout of Kőszeg's walls made mining a feasible strategy, but even though several mines succeeded in blowing holes in the fortifications, the defenders held out. For more than twenty-five days, without any artillery, Captain Nikola Jurišić and his garrison of 800 Croats held out against nineteen full-scale assaults and an incessant bombardment by the Ottomans.

The outcome has two versions. In the first version, Nikola Jurišić rejected the offer to surrender on favourable terms, and the Ottomans retreated. In the second version, the city was offered terms for a nominal surrender. The only Ottomans who would be allowed to enter the castle would be a token force who would raise the Ottoman flag. In either case, Suleiman withdrew at the arrival of the August rains, and returned homeward instead of continuing towards Vienna as previously planned. He had been delayed nearly four weeks, and during this time a powerful army had been collected in Vienna, which Suleiman had not the intention to face. According to historian Paolo Giovio, Charles arrived with an imperial army at Vienna on September 23, too late for fighting the Ottomans since Suleiman already withdrew. By their defense of Kőszeg, Nikola Jurišić and his men had saved Vienna from a siege.

In 1538, the king made him the supreme army commander of the armed forces defending the borders. He spent the last years of his life as a secret adviser at the court in Vienna.

The Heroes who fell in Constantinople in 1453.

Maurizio Cattaneo, the Bocchiardo brothers, the Castilian nobleman Don Francisco de Toledo, the German engineer Johannes Grant, Giovanni Giustiniani and everybody who chose to die for Europe, far away from their home countries.

Denial: The initial stage: "It can't be happening." Maniot is on top of me.
Anger: "Why ME? It's not fair?!" (either referring to God, oneself, or Maniot perceived, rightly or wrongly, as "responsible")
Bargaining: "Just let me stay to post another day Maniot, please."
Depression: "I'm so sad, why are you picking on me Maniot?"
Acceptance: "It's going to be OK." There is always Skadi.

    Ivan Sirko

Koshevoy ataman of Zaporozhian host. Fought many battles against Ottomans and never lost one. Raided and burned Kaffa (largest slave market ever existed in Europe) which contributed significantly to decline of Crimean Khanate and consequently greatly reduced influence of Ottoman Empire on areas North and East of Black sea.

Famous for being co-author of the most offensive letter in history of diplomatic relationships ever written to a leader of major power.

    Gotse Delchev

Delchev's involvement in BMARC was an important moment in the history of the Macedonian-Adrianople liberation movement.[24] The years between the end of 1896, when he left the Exarchate's educational system and 1903 when he died, represented the final and most effective revolutionary phase of his short life. In the period 1897–1902 he was a representative of the Foreign Committee of the BMARC in Sofia. Again in Sofia, negotiating with suspicious politicians and arms merchants, Delchev saw more of the unpleasant face of the Principality, and became even more disillusioned with its political system. In 1897 he, along with Gyorche Petrov, wrote the new organization's statute, which divided Macedonia and Adrianople areas into seven regions, each with a regional structure and secret police, following the Internal Revolutionary Organization's example. Below the regional committees were districts.[25] The Central committee was placed in Salonica. In 1898 Delchev decided to be created a permanent acting armed bands (chetas) in every district. From 1902 till his death he was the leader of the chetas, i.e. the military institute of the Organization because, he had considerable knowledge in the area of military skills.[26] Delchev ensured the functioning of the underground border crossings of the organization and the arms depots added to them, alongside the then Bulgarian-Ottoman border.
His correspondence with other BMARC/SMARO members covers extensive data on supplies, transport and storage of weapons and ammunition in Macedonia. Delchev envisioned independent production of weapons, which resulted in the establishment of a bomb manufacturing plant in the village of Sabler near Kyustendil in Bulgaria. The bombs were later smuggled across the Ottoman border into Macedonia.[27] Gotse Delchev was the first to organize and lead a band into Macedonia with the purpose of robbing or kidnapping a rich Turks. His experiences demonstrate the weaknesses and difficulties which the Organization faced in its early years.[28] Later he was one of the organizers of the Miss Stone Affair. He made two short visits to the Adrianople area of Thrace in 1896 and 1898.[29] In the winter of 1900 he resided for a while in Burgas, where Delchev organized another bomb manufacturing plant, which dynamite was used later by the Thessaloniki bombings.[30] In 1900 he inspected also the BMARC's detachments in Eastern Thrace again, aiming better coordination between Macedonian and Thracian revolutionary committees. Since the Autumn of 1901 till the early Spring of 1902, he made an important inspection in Macedonia, touring all revolutionary districts there. He led also the congress of the Adrianople revolutionary district held in Plovdiv in April 1902. Afterwards Delchev inspected the BMARC's structures in the Central Rhodopes. The inclusion of the rural areas into the organizational districts contributed to the expansion of the organization and the increase in its membership, while providing the essential prerequisites for the formation of the military power of the organization, at the same time having Delchev as its military advisor (inspector) and chief of all internal revolutionary bands.

Shishman III is reputed descendant of the family Shishmans , proclaimed king of Bulgaria during the First Tarnovo Uprising in 1598 year. a short period of time Sofia was liberated from the power of the Ottomans , but soon a large Ottoman army invaded the city and quell the uprising.

Todor Ballina is a Bulgarian boyar of 1596 in Nikopol , "the first gentleman of the Nikopol district." It is one of the leaders of the First Tarnovo Uprising against Ottoman rule in 1598

Here's what the legate Paul Djordjevic about it:

Mr. Todor Ballina's first noble in Nikopol district that (author - a nobleman) enjoys great influence among the Christians of this country due to its noble origin and their dignity. Turks watch it in your mouth what you say (author - commanded) and pashas respect him too much and consult him on every important issue.

In 1592 broke out the next year Austro-Turkish War , which ended in 1606 year. Austrian Habsburgs are trying to build a broad anti-Ottoman Christian Coalition, which includes vassal Ottoman rulers of principalities Wallachia , Moldova and Sedmogradsko . In order to assist the advance of the troops, the Austrians inspire uprisings in the border with the Ottoman Empire, areas such as Banat . In the autumn of 1594 years combined forces under the command of Wallachian Prince Michael Vityazul attacking Ottoman fortresses on the Danube . 's Army cavalry Vityazul act of 4000 volunteers, commanded by Marco Deli and Baba Novak . Cavalry devastated towns and villages in Pleven and Nikopol in today's northern Bulgaria. Meanwhile army Vityazul reached Edirne , burning Turkish villages in its path. Along with these entirely share with the Vienna actions in many other places in the Balkans erupted insurgent action against their oppressors - in the spring of 1595 the 2000 rebels attacked Sofia , and the next 1596 is revolutionary actions in the area between Sofia and Nis .

Start of rebel activities placed on the re-invasion of Wallachian army of Michael Vityazul in today's northern Bulgaria. Vityazul breaks in Nikopol sent against him Ottoman parts and deep into the enemy territory as a burned Vidin , Svishtov , Oryahovo , Vratsa , Pleven and more than 2,000 villages between River and Sofia Turks killed on the road and headed to Silistra .

Bulgarian uprising in Turnovo and under the flags gather 12,000 people. Conspirators proclaim Bulgarian king Shishman III - a direct descendant of bogus or Shishmans . Rebel action quickly spread to areas set but failed Ottoman authorities brutally suppress them. Drivers then avoid defeat in Wallachia and hence elsewhere. In Wallachia flee for fear of retaliation by different data from 16 000 to 50 to 60 thousand Bulgarian families.

Austrian Emperor does not fulfill his promise of military assistance and Bulgarian rebels abandon their own forces. This unforeseen circumstance planned largely contributed to the defeat of the uprising.

As indirect evidence it can be concluded that the rebel territory covers the regions of Sofia , Ohrid and Nis . Despite the failure of the enterprise, obviously Catholic propaganda in the Bulgarian lands is inspired by the spirit of freedom among the Bulgarians and enhances its activity here in the coming years. The activity of the Bulgarian Petar Bogdan and Briz are examples of this trend in the papal foreign policy .

    Jean de la Valette

Jean Parisot de Valette (4 February 1495, Parisot, Rouergue - 21 August 1568, Malta) was a French nobleman and 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, from 1557 to 1568.

As a Knight Hospitaller, joining the order in the Langue de Provence, he fought with distinction against the Turks at Rhodes. As Grand Master, Valette became the Order's hero and most illustrious leader, commanding the resistance against the Ottomans at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, widely regarded as one of the greatest sieges of all time. He became Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller on 21 August 1557.

He fought and successfully repulsed the Turks at the Great Siege of Malta (1565), in which the vastly outnumbered Christians held out for over 3 months against an Ottoman force containing no less than 30,000 soldiers, including the Janissaries, as well as the Sultan's fleet of some 193 ships.

As a result of the Order's victory he gained much prestige in Europe, but he declined the offer of a cardinal's hat in order to maintain independence from the papacy. This has been attributed to his sense of modesty and his humility as a warrior monk. However, it has often been overlooked that as a Grand Master of the Order, he automatically had the same precedence as the most junior Cardinal within the Church and enjoyed a Cardinal's distinction without being involved in the internal politics of the Holy See. Even from its beginnings, the Grand Master of the Order owed allegiance only to the Pope, and to this day is recognised as the head of an Order which has diplomatic recognition with the United Nations and 100 other countries.
