He was Mongol who mixed with Turkic tribes like Uzbeks. On wiki it said something about Barlas who intermingled with Tukic tribes.
" Gerasimov also found that Timur's facial characteristics conformed to that of fairly Mongoloid features with somewhat Caucasoid admixture.[70] In the study of "Anthropological composition of the population of Central Asia" shows the cranium of Timur predominate the characters of the South Siberian Mongoloid type.[86] Timur is classified as being closer to the Mongoloid race with some admixture. The Chechens fought Tamerlane's forces fiercely, but eventually they were overwhelmed. Tamerlane devestated Chechnya. It is said only a third of all Chechens survived his butchery. Chechens were forced to abandon the Northern lowlands and retreated back into our precious mountains as we have so many times in our history. When Tamerlane reached the Caucasus in the 14th century the Chechens must have resisted so fiercely that Tamerlane sought to make them his allies and presented them with a precious sabre. According to the saga, he asked his commander: “Is it true that you have subjugated the Chechens, that their widows are weeping and wailing and you have taken their pondurs from them?” – “No, sire,” the officer was compelled to admit. “They are playing on their panduri and dancing!” Tamerlane replied “Then you have not vanquished them!”

Timur was a Turk in all aspects. His supposed Mongol origin and connection to Genghis Khan is thought to be made up by his grandson for legitimacy after Timur's death. When Timur was alive, he was a de facto ruler, a warlord, not a khan. He had to keep Mongol Sultan Mahmud on the throne as a puppet.

Well, Timur also attacked on Ottoman Turks and caused interregnum period for 11 years. The all death thing might be exaggerated but the thing, he was a catastrophic ruler for the West Asia, is right.
However, I perceive him as a wise leader and a real intellectual. It is known he protected scientists and invited them to Samarkand. Also his grandsons(Ulugh Beg and Babur) were definitely great people as well.
