Giorgos Katidis Nazi Salute

ATHENS, Greece -- AEK Athens midfielder Giorgos Katidis has earned rebukes from politicians, fellow athletes and fans after giving a Nazi salute in celebration of a goal he scored in the Greek league.

Photographs show him giving a Nazi salute after scoring the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute over visiting Veria on Saturday. In one photo, Katidis' Brazilian-born teammate, Roger Guerreiro, looks at him with an expression of astonishment.

The 20-year-old Katidis pleaded ignorance of the meaning of his gesture – right arm extended and hand straightened. He claimed on his Twitter account that he detests fascism.

AEK's German coach Ewald Lienen, said the player doesn't have an "idea about politics."

In his defense I would like to say that the so called "Nazi Salute" is actually a Roman salute or greeting and has existed before the Germans had any system of government, and if he lives in a country that has democracy, he can have the freedom to believe in whatever he wants, although as he said, he "detests fascism."

According to th Golden Dawn themselves their salute (a version of the ancient one) doesn't angle up so much. This ones definitely Nazi (or Hezballah).

Or could be just a Roman salute. Many people don't really know about Hezbollah.

Seeing someone in Greece greet in a "Nazi" salute is not something rare. They will just lift their hand up in the same way except with the wrist a little higher and with a smile, that will be a greeting. I do it, and I know many people who do it the same way. We don't see it as anything pertaining to Nazis.
