Default Who are the Gagauz people closest to?

I am confused about these people. Some say they are Turks, some say they are Turkified Bulgarians. But apparently they are genetically closer to south eastern Europeans then what they are to Turks from Anatolia, for example.

What is your opinion on them? I don't expect many people to know much about them though.

There is a poll, so vote please.

If Pomaks are Bulgarians, the Gagauz are Turks.

Gagauz Turks were already there long before the Ottoman conquest of the Balkan peninsula.
So explain it to me, how the fuck did they manage to Turkify themselves?

Gagauz people were brought from the Balkans in the 19th century. Learn history before posting on the subject.

No one tested Gagauz autosomal DNA as far as I know. One should not draw grand conclusions from Y-DNA markers. Besides, genetics alone doesn't determine ethnic identity in the Balkans (or in the rest of the Old World for that matter): Bulgarians and Romanians genetically cluster together, but no anthropologist would lump Bulgarians together with Romanians against other Slavic peoples in terms of ethnic identity.

I meant "Balkan Peninsula" by saying "there".
