Brabantse poffer. The Brabantse poffer was a kind of headdress worn by the women of Brabant (Southern part of the Netherlands) but mainly around the area just south of 's-Hertogenbosch (known as De Meierij). Depending on the material that was used, the decoration and the way they were worn the wearer could be linked to a certain social class or a particular village. The wearing of traditional costumes was already slowly waning by the late 19th century but took a nosedive in the years following World War II. By 1960 the wearing of most traditional costumes (not just in Brabant) had gone virtually extinct. Now only a few people still wear traditional costumes on a daily basis. The average age is above 60. Only on special occasions (such as weddings) can traditional clothes (such as the Brabant costume and the poffer or also the various other regional costumes) been seen.
