Germany to grant additional compensation to child victims of the Holocaust
Compensation will be in addition to existing pensions • Survivors who were born between January 1928 and May 1945 in Germany or Nazi-allied nations will be eligible for financial compensation • Holocaust survivors' advocate: This represents progress.
In an unprecedented move, the German government has decided to recognize the extreme suffering of Holocaust survivors who were children during the war, and grant them additional compensation.
Germany announced the decision following meetings between representatives from the Claims Conference, the heads of the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors in Israel and representatives from the German Finance Ministry in Jerusalem on Sunday.
"This definitely represents significant progress," said COHSI Chairwoman Colette Avital. "After much effort, this is the first time that the German government is acknowledging the justice of the claim and announcing that it will consider ways to compromise with those children who suffered the Holocaust, and who were the hardest hit."
