Default Mainland versus islander Greeks: Is there a phenotypic difference, or do they look the same?

Do mainland Greeks, such as Epirotes, Macedonians, Peloponnesians, etc. look noticeably distinct from Greek islanders (Cretans, Aegean islanders like Rhodes, Chios, etc.) by and large? Obviously there will be similar appearances some of the time since islanders do have ancestry from the mainland of Greece going back thousands of years.

But, do you think there is a difference?

I personally think, both from personal experience and from many pictures over the internet, that mainland Greeks have a significantly higher number of people who look generally "Balkanic" (Albanian, Bulgarian, Macedonian most notably but some even pan-Balkan) and a much lower amount of people who pass outside of Europe. I also find that in groups, I do not mistake mainland Greeks for southern Italians like I often can mistake say, Cretans for.

hard to tell, but greeks from different islands are usually different in culture so they should also look different.

Voted for the first option. However, there is a slight difference between Northern Greeks without Anatolian/Pontic blood and Southern Greeks. My Dad told me Greeks from Beria looked different from those from Athens.

I don't think there is an huge difference between islander Greeks and mainland Greeks, perahps in regins like Epirus there are more dinarioid and alpinoid tendencies.

The greater difference is that Aegeans(where also most of Asia Minor/Anatolian Greeks belong) are more hairy compared to mainland Greeks. Some Aegeans have west asian influence than mainland Greeks who have more Alpine and Dinaric influence. But anyway, mainland Greek Meds descend from Aegean Meds, so there isn't not much difference.

And a northerner type of Greek Med(he is from Athens).

This thread is kinda old, and I think much knowledge has been added since then, like
1)no Greek area is by majority similar to Balkans, either anthropologically or genetically, this illusion was created due to the fact that Greece is more euro shifted than most of people in its parallel. Maybe the 40% of the population looks more balkanic, in both mainland and the islands, slightly more in mainland, but still less in some parts of mainland than some islands
But the majority of greeks in both mainland and the islands are clearly their own, and if we have to compare with foreign populations, closer to South-central Italy than to balkans
    2) there is nothing indicating that there are two clear separated genetic categories, mainland and Islands, for sure there are differences between regions or between islands
    3) most of cretans are not different from the rest of greeks, especially anthropologically
    4) even though it's a little off topic, there are reasons for the creation of the Italian phrase "una faccia una razza", In ww2, and it's not "the islands",As they occupied the country nearly as a whole, except of Crete

Interesting that after so many threads on this issue the difference is only 1 vote

The right choice for people who know the country, either after visiting it or living here is 3

There is no mainland-islands cultural division, other divisions are accurate, such as inland-coastal

    Sikeliot threads

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Eph. 6:12

Definition of untrustworthy and loose character are those that don't believe in God.

    Ok,Sikeliot

Lets play a game and guess a little, here a few pictures of different people from Greece.
If you are really such an expert guess from which parts of Greece they are from.
If they are from Islands or from the Mainland or Pontian e.c.t and if possible from wich particular regions.

Also classify them in terms of your well known patterns, what do they look more alike

    Balkan,Slavic,Italian,Levantine
