That is something I've sometimes wondered and it could be I'm just misinformed. How comes the influence of the Italian language on Libya and the Horn was so little in comparison with that of the other colonial powers in Africa?

Even triestine is considered ''colonial venetian'', so yes...talian is a colonial form of venetic.
Too little times of domination, except Lybia and Eritrea. But in lybia, virtually all the coasta population (so, more than 60%) is able to understand or speak italian eveb because they receive our TVs and they're, in last years, oen of our primary source of immigrants.
About erirtrean language:
Tigrigna vs. Tigrinya
Two different spellings are commonly used for this term which refers to the language spoken by people of Eritrea and of Tigray province in Ethiopia. Both Tigrigna and Tigrinya are commonly accepted spellings.
Tigrigna is considered to be the correct spelling, and is the common choice by people who know Italian or who have been exposed to Italian language and cultural influences in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The 'g' in the word gives a clue about how a more accurate pronunciation would sound.
Tigrinya is considered also to be an accepted spelling, and is the common choice by people who do not have the Italian language influence, but rather an English influence.

''Colonial venetian'' is a term used to indicate every language derived by venetian, it isn't related with the concept of ''colony''.
