A draft report by Portuguese green MEP Rui Tavares about the situation of humans rights in Hungary draws false conclusions from the facts, a government official told lawmakers on Monday.

It is unacceptable for the European Parliament to make recommendations to Hungary that go beyond the scope of its authority, Eniko Gyori, the foreign ministry state secretary in charge of European affairs told the parliamentary European affairs committee.

The Tavares draft report includes many factual mistakes and it is a political document, given that the EP is a political body, she said. Several amendment proposals have been submitted so the final report is not yet known, she added.

Committee chairman Richard Horcsik, of the ruling Fidesz party, said the statements in the report calling into question whether Hungary is a democracy are unacceptable. He called for a new report to be prepared, showing a realistic picture of the country.

Zoltan Balczo of the radical nationalist Jobbik said his party rejected the claim that constitutionality is under threat in Hungary. The draft report demonstrates that the EU is using false accusations in an attempt undermine the government of an independent country, he added.
