Fact: Ethnic Cleansing of Christian Quarters of İzmir (aka Smyrna), in 1922, has been documented. Christian Greeks and Armenians fled from the city, under duress, having witnessed the slaughter of many of their kin, by Turkish thugs; but, their flight was obstructed by Turkish military units, while European sea vessels observed the fire, from afar. Little remains of the Christian Greek and Armenian settlements in İzmir, despite that they numbered in the hundreds of thousands, prior to the evacuation; therefore, those people were ethnically cleansed from the area.
Fact: Turkish military units covertly set fire to Armenian and Greek Christian Quarters of İzmir (aka Smyrna), in 1922, and only the Christian Quarter were burnt to the ground. Eyewitness accounts give testimony to the observation of uniformed Turkish soldiers setting fire to Greek and Armenian homes and businesses (and confirm that suspicion).
Fact: The YMCA provided shelter and food for hungry Greek and Armenian refugees who were forcibly expelled from their homes in İzmir (aka Smyrna), as documented by films of their destitute condition in well managed refugee camps. The Greeks and Armenians were compelled to leave their homes, in the city, under duress, having witnessed the killing of many of their kin, by Turkish thugs. Meanwhile, photographers were photographing an exuberant Ataturk, with his smiling military commanders, at the very same time that YMCA refugee camps provided refugees with shelter, food, and safety. Therefore, Ataturk did indeed celebrate at the expense of destitute refugees.
