Although that is true, I think he was using the old definition of American pre-1965 where 90% of Americans were whites and most of those were a mix of Northwest European, although a substantial number were of both Eastern and Southern Europeans. Just before the immigration law change, around 10% of Americans were non-white (non-European). But the US has changed a lot since the immigration laws were changed in 1965 to allow immigration from outside of Europe, and today (52 years later) non-whites make up nearly 40% of the US population and whites make up around 60%, down from 90%. So the US is very different within the last few decades than it has been for over 200 years. So it's hard thing to figure out why many around the world still have this view of the US of being a mainly white nation with a pan-Northwest European majority.
