    Default Medieval names vs modern

Albanians are a good example of a old medieval name still being used over a modern. In other words foreign people still refer to the Albanian people with the same name they were referred in medieval times whereas they themselves use another one.

Are there more examples of such cases in other populations/cultures and how come new names dont replace old ones?

In Poland the oldest national last names come from the names of animals, trees, geographical features, professions etc. Later on in middle ages the ending SKI appeared and was added to those ancient names, and the names ending in SKI became the majority of last names in Poland. Though those ancient unaltered names still exist today and are not uncommon.

For example the ancient Kowal=Smith became Kowalski, Kowalewski etc.

The original ancient Polish names are like Wilk=Wolf, Kruk=Raven, Jesion=Elm etc
