To me, although the vocabulary is closer to Portuguese by a significant amount, Spanish sounds much more similar to Italian than to Portuguese.

It looks more like Portuguese on paper but sounds more like Italian when it's spoken.

I think Italian and Spanish sound unmistakably Romance/Latin, while Portuguese does not. Which might be why it sounds different. I also think French doesn't sound very Latin either.

Romanian, surprisingly, sounds more Latin than either Portuguese or French in sound, but with a Slavic influence.

Spanish and Italian are clear, while Portuguese, French and Catalan are not. That is mainly due to the quality of the vowels.

Saying that Spanish and Italian are more Romance because of that is just stupid.

I don't mean that. I mean that they SOUND distinctly like Romance languages such that if you hear them you'll know right away they are a Romance language even if you can't identify which. If I heard Portuguese or French and didn't know which language family they belonged to, I'd have one hell of a time guessing.

And I like how Portuguese sounds best of the Romance languages actually.

Spanish to me sounds like a fast forwards version of Italian plus the asses. Or the esses or whatever.

Then you must think of Greek as a Romance language too.

It sounds vaguely like incomprehensible Spanish to me, or a southern Italian dialect with different words. But it's not a Romance language so I don't count it as a relevant part of the discussion.
