I use my hair as it is naturally: long and straight. But sometimes (like right now) I cut it in layers. So it's definitely long, but layered.
As for men's hair. It depends on the men.

I also like Colleen Moore, a silent star from the same era, who had a similar kind of hair cut. Some of her films deserve to be seen. I particularly love "Ella Cinders", "Why Be Good?" and "Orchids and Ermine".

Not too long or short. To me, hair has to reach the eyes. It's great when you take a shower and the wet hair reach your eyes. Some example of hairstyles I like:
