This freight steamer fell victim to Lake Superior on Independence Day in 1883. This ship crashed onto Au Sable reef on July 4, 1883. It weighed 645 tons, and was 200 feet long. She was accidentally run aground in foggy conditions when her crew lost their way. After other ships attempted to pull her off of the reef, the Mary Jarecki was left alone to be destroyed by Lake Superior. This shipwreck is on the beach west of the Au Sable Point Lighthouse, one of the most isolated Lighthouse stations ever created. The nearest town is Grand Marais, which lies 12 miles to the east.
The Mary Jarecki takes the cake for me.. little remains now (only beams and metal rods) + although no one died of the seventeen on board it does have a deathlike aura:

I've always wanted to take explore the sea for old ships. It sounds like quite an adventure.

The one in Pensacola... is that the Oriskany? It was sunk in 2006 to become an artificial reef.

Default 30 Beautifully Decaying Shipwrecks That Call Our Oceans Their Grave

    Source: http://news.distractify.com/mark-pyg...ng-shipwrecks/

    Sunrise Orient [Hong Kong]

This recent but equally enchanting grave is a 2,500-tonne shipping container that took on water off the coast of Hong Kong.

    Mars [Baltic Sea]

Mars, a Swedish warship, was the largest of its time. Despite the fact that it sank during a bloody battle over 500 years ago, in 1564, this is one of the most well preserved wrecks in the world.

Three boats at the Doha Ship Graveyard [Kuwait]

The Doha peninsula is one of the many intentional dumping grounds where ships go to die. The wet beaches create an amazing spectacle, reflecting the decaying shells.

    The Sweepstakes [Lake Huron]

Sweepstakes was a 119-foot Canadian schooner which was damaged at sea in 1885. Although it reached the shallow waters of the harbour, the leaks couldn’t be fixed and it sank where it stood. Thanks to its relatively low depth, Sweepstakes is an amazing wreck for novices to explore.

    Dimitrios [Laconic Bay, Greece]

Dimitrios is believed to have been used to smuggle cigarettes between Turkey and Italy. After being seized by the port authorities, it was left to drift and eventually set alight.

Abandoned whaling boats become the latest victims of rust [Grytviken, South Georgia]

A decaying tug boat. [Point Reyes, California]

    Chuuk Lagoon [Micronesia]

Chuuk Lagoon was Japan’s main naval base during the Second World War. In 1944, the harbour came under attack from American forces, and 44 Japanese ships and 249 aircraft were sent to the bottom.

Lady Elizabeth [Whale Bone Cove, Falkland Islands]

A huge iron barque of 1,155 tons launched in 1879, the Lady Elizabeth broke away from port during a storm and drifted to where she lays today, still largely intact it acts as a magnificent view into the past.

    Frigate 356 [Cayman Islands]

Frigate 356 was a Soviet ship which served during the Cold War. In the 90s, the ship was scuttled. Being made from cheap aluminium, it has decayed quickly and looks like it has been at the bottom for hundreds of years.

    S.S. Thistlegorm [Red Sea, Egypt]

S.S. Thistlegorm was a British merchant ship sunk by the enemy in 1941. At the time of her sinking, Thistlegorm was carrying trucks heading for the North African front, they are still in her hold to this day.

A soviet ship left to rot after the collapse of the USSR [Murmansk, Russia]

MS World Discoverer [Roderick Bay, Nggela Island]

The MS World Discoverer was a German cruise ship which ran aground during a voyage. Thankfully, all lives were saved but the ship is now a shadow of its former self.

    Mediterranean Sky [Elefsina, Greece]

Following financial difficulties, this cruise ship was dumped in the middle of a bay.

    SS America [Fuerteventura, Canary Islands]

This former United States ocean liner was wrecked in 1994 after 54 years of service. She had been on her way to be transformed into a hotel, but, following a storm, she broke away from her tow ship.

    Olympia [Amorgos Island, Greece]

The mysterious Olympia is believed to have been hijacked and run ashore by pirates. Now, this beautiful wreck is a popular tourist spot.

BOS 400 [Maori Bay, South Africa]

BOS 400 is a truly massive oil barge that broke away from its tow ship during a harsh storm.

La Famille Express [Provo, Caribbean Sea]

In 2004, in the midst of Hurricane Frances, this freighter broke loose and moored on an area of reef.

    SS Ayrfield [Homebush Bay, Australia]

Homebush Bay is home to the remnants of a ship-breaking yard no longer in operation. Among the wrecks left behind is the SS Ayrfield, a 1,140-tonne steam collier used as a transport ship during World War I. Now, it is home to a small floating forest.

MV RMS Mulheim [Land's End, United Kingdom]

    Semiramis [Andros Island, Greece]

This passenger boat that now looks like a terrifying ghost ship ran aground in 1954.

The Hans Egede [Cliffe, United Kingdom]

This decayed wreck was a 3-masted ship, built in 1922. In 1957, after years of hard service, her body broke as she was being towed, beaching her at Cliffe.

    Nouadhibou Ship Cemetery [Mauritania, Africa]

The surreal port of Nouadhibou is home to more than 300 decaying ships, making it the largest ship graveyard in the world. Corrupt officials have allowed the illegal dumping of ships here for years.

Sinking sail boats [River Orwell, Pin Mill, Suffolk, United Kingdom]

    Murmansk [Sřrvćr, Norway]

Following the fall of the USSR, this 1955 cruiser was sold for scrap to India in 1994 but ran into difficulties off the Norwegian village of Sřrvćr. This relic of the past was removed in 2013 following fears that it contained nuclear material.

An abandoned smugglers ship. [Navagio Beach, Zakynthos Island, Greece]

Known as Shipwreck Beach, right in the middle of these blinding white sands is a smuggling ship that ran aground and was set alight to destroy any evidence.

MS Lord Selkirk II [Selkirk Slough, Manitoba, Canada]

After being retired in 1990, MS Lord Selkirk II was left at the end of a dock and all but forgotten. Years of neglect have seen this once extravagant cruise ship transform into what you see today.

    Giannis D [Red Sea, Egypt]

Giannis D sank in 1983, along with its cargo of timber. The wreck, which sunk near a coral reef, now acts as a treasure trove of local wildlife.

The Russian Wreck [Red Sea, Egypt]

Unidentified, this wreck is simply known as the ‘Russian Wreck.’ Most believe the ship to be Khanka, a Soviet spy ship lost some time before 1982, although the Russian Government refuse to confirm the speculation. In exploring the wreck, divers have found a vast array of Cold War spy equipment.

    Eduard Bohlen [Skeleton Coast, Namibia]

The Eduard Bohlen ran into the Skeleton Coast among thick fog in 1909. If anything personifies the loneliness of Namibia’s vast and desolate coast best, it is this rusting hulk.
