Good point, though I've been always partial to "Ki-Mer-iya" based on the Greek Kimmeroi and the cognate Cymbria (kəm.rɨ) , who were the descendants of Conan's people according to Howard

But I read that Novalyne Price recalled that Howard himself did pronounce it as Ci-merria.

Hehe, not, according to Howard the Cimmerian are an Atlantid people(From sunken Atlantis) and are based in the ancestral proto-Celtic(before the Celts) people from his ancestry land, Ireland, Scotland and the Atlantic coast etc.. I could give more information about it, but not now, I must go.

Yeah, Cymru is Wales! and it's a cognate with other similar names like Cumberland and Cumbria etc. So Cimmerian is supposed to be related to them. Somehow, Howard believed that the historical Cimmerians from the Pontic Steppe were related to the Celts/Proto-Celts/Picts/Atlantids or whatever. This is somehow analogous to the Scythian-Irish link- and the British/Welsh Sarmatian one.

Although Howard's history was obviously conflated or erroneous on some things, you can't but admire his familiarity with history evident in the layers in the creation of his stories and races.

Howard makes a historical and fantasy mix very interesting, in one of his manuscripts he explains how the Atlanteans lost their little island continent, Atlantid, a great cataclysm, it sinks into the waters of the Atlantid sea, some survivors swam to reach the shores of the main land of the continent, a proto-Europe land, then these Atlantid men suffer an involution and lose their civilization, becoming barbarians, these people would be cimmerians, living with its westerners neighbours who are their enemy tribes, the Picts, Picts also be related to ancient tribes of western Europe---->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picts because Howard based his fictional universe in true parts of the real history. The continent has yet to suffer another cataclysm that would end in the current European continent, Pictish tribes invade the Hyborians lands, the ancient European civilization, and dominate a few hundred years, only to be invaded by the Indoaryos a dozens of centuries later.

The true story of Conan and Hyborians and has been contaminated by others authors, who have used the early death of Howard for their own benefit, for example, comparing the God Crom with the Viking god Odin, when the real intention of Howard was always to make a nod to the Gaelic people.
