Japanese woman spends $100k on plastic surgery to become ‘French doll’
Vanilla Chamu” was an ordinary-looking – dare we say, “normal”? – 17-year-old Japanese girl, but that was before all the surgery and operations. Obviously, she wasn’t called Vanilla Chamu then, but because of her childhood trauma of being called busaiku (ugly), she wanted to look like a French doll – even if it took plastic surgery to do it. Now, 30 odd surgical procedures past, she looks nothing like here 17-year-old self. But in our opinion, she looks nothing like a French doll either.
Chamu was relatively unknown, doing some model work for fashion magazines. But that all changed when she appeared this April on a Japanese variety show Watashi no Nani ga Ikenai no? (literally “Is there something wrong with me?”), where her appearance this week became the hot topic in Japan’s most famous online forum, 2ch. In the show she related the story behind her insatiable desire to look like a doll. She had plastic surgery done for the first time after graduating from high school. She said that she was traumatized from being called ugly when she was young, as even her father told her to “suck it up” because nothing could be done about her appearance. From that time on, Chamu has had over three dozen surgical operations done to get her looking how she does now.

Chamu revealed that she has spent in excess of ten million yen (over 100,000 US dollars) for over 30 procedures to get her looking what she looks like now – which in our opinion is, really, not very good. She has worked as a hostess and in other odd jobs just to save money for her operations. In the pictures embedded in this article, you Chamu’s appearance has evolved from when she was 17 when she was surgery-free, until now. Yes, we admit that she does look different (wouldn’t you?) – but she doesn’t look particularly good, either. The mildest we can come up with is some level of “scary”. On the show, Chamu wasn’t introduced as the doll she is so desperately wanting to be like, but as a “cyborg” – because in truth, she no longer looks human. Why a French doll, you ask? Chamu explains that these dolls, very popular in Japan, are rarely called ugly, so that’s why she’s had over thirty procedures to try to look like that (can’t argue with the logic there). When asked if she would ever stop having surgery done, she answers that she’ll probably never be content with the way she looks. Go figure.
