Slavery inquiry: Daniel Doran and Thomas Doran remanded

A father and son have been remanded in custody charged with slavery offences.

Daniel Doran, 66, Thomas Doran, 36, appeared before Cwmbran magistrates on Thursday. Another man David Daniel Doran, 42, has yet to be dealt with.

They were among four people arrested in a raid on a farm on the outskirts of Newport on Monday.

All were charged with false imprisonment, conspiracy to hold a person in servitude and conspiracy to force a person to work.

Thomas Doran was also charged with kidnapping by fraud.

A 42-year-old woman who was also arrested has been released on police bail.

Their arrests had followed a police raid at a farm near Marshfield on the outskirts of Newport where a Polish man was found living in poor conditions.

The raid at Cariad Farm took place as part of a police inquiry started after a British man was found living in poor conditions at the same site in March.

A third man aged 60, also British, was found during a raid at a former plant nursery in nearby St Brides on Tuesday as part of the investigation, called Operation Imperial. He is undergoing health checks.

Three men arrested in connection with the St Brides raid have all been released on police bail.

'Fast-moving investigation'

Speaking about the decision to charge Daniel Doran, David Daniel Doran, and Thomas Doran, Catrin Evans, head of the complex casework unit at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Cymru-Wales, said: "I have now carried out a review of the evidence gathered by Gwent Police in relation to three of these suspects. My review has been carried out under the threshold test of the Code for Crown Prosecutors.

"My conclusion is that there is sufficient evidence to charge Thomas Doran, Daniel Doran, and David Daniel Doran with false imprisonment, conspiracy to hold a person in servitude and conspiracy to require a person to perform forced or compulsory labour.

"In addition, there is sufficient evidence to charge Thomas Doran with kidnapping by fraud."

Police have said the "unprecedented" inquiry was sparked after another man was found in March at Cariad Farm in Peterstone, near Marshfield, after being missing for 13 years.

He had vanished while on holiday in the south Wales resort of Porthcawl.

He was found living in poor conditions with torn clothes and teeth missing, and was described as being "vulnerable".

As part of the inquiry, police have also been searching a compost heap at Cariad Farm with mechanical diggers following intelligence that a body may be buried there.

Det Supt Paul Griffiths said: "Whilst this is a welcome development, this fast-moving investigation continues and officers remain at the site in the Marshfield area."

Mr Griffiths issued an appeal once again for anyone with information which can assist police to contact them on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Gwent Police has been leading Operation Imperial working in conjunction with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), other forces, the UK Human Trafficking Centre, the RSPCA and the Red Cross.
