I don't think the ethnocultural differences between Europeans can be simplified to just a few opposites. Furthermore, you can't draw an absolute border and say "here is north and here is south", it's more like a set of gradients and only few steep borders. And every country and region is a case of it's own. The most prominent distinction today must be the ex-east-bloc/western Europe division.

Stereotypes make it easier to handle information, but they're not particularly good for understanding reality.

Saying "Europe is a geographical expression" is delusional? First you said the exact opposite.

Imo there is a greater divide between Western and Eastern Europe than Northern and Southern Europe. The main differences are tribal, linguistic and cultural. The Eastern parts tend to be Slavic. The Western parts aren't.

Yes, it is an oversimplified explanation but nevertheless imo a valid one.

In my opinion, there is a greater divide between Western Europe and Eastern Europe. However there is also a divide within Western Europe along religious lines which I think can be most adequately characterised as as a Northern and Southern divide.

Hmmm... At the moment the larger divide is between East and West due to the impact of communism Vs capitalism.
North and South Europe is more a case of Germanics and friends Vs the Romance countries - a who's better than who? contest.

There are literally shit loads of differences, but that's what makes Europe so great and interesting.
    Sure does.

There's simply too much to make any list. There are more than enough regional differences in tiny England alone to make a person go mad.
Yep, even little Wales (not part of England) is split between North and South with regional differences - the Northerners are called "Gogs" or something, I forget what the Southern Welsh are called, but to the English they're both the same

The divisions in Europe exist in certain contexts. When discussing geo-politics, economics, religion, linguistics, and European history, there is a greater emphasis on the East-West division. The North-South Division is brought up in troll threads when a Nordicist proclaims that Southerners are dirty mongrels, or when a Greco-Romanist/Mediterraneanist writes about how uncivilized and backwards the Northerners were during the time of Rome.

    Much more north/south than east/west.

The debate over the Eurozone economy is a prime example, with Germany, Netherlands and other northern European countries on one side (including Estonia), and Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece on the other. These countries extend from Portugal & Spain on the far western end of Europe to Greece on the far eastern end. The differences over economy arise from basic cultural differences.

The 'east/west divide' is an outdated relic of the cold war.

Religion roughly matches the divide, with most northern European countries being protestant, and most southern being Catholic. It's not the best determination though, as Catholic Italy is much more similar culturally to Orthodox Greece than to Catholic Bavaria.

The biggest difference is between Greece & Finland, so between South East & North East.
