I have posted something similar in the past but I cannot find it to bump it.

Hard to say really but I think that it is more likely than ancient Greeks were more Near Eastern/West Asian than modern Greeks who have more North European/Slavic ancestry.

That would have been my assumption, and I would always point to modern day Aegean islanders as well as southern Italians are what the ancient Greeks once were, but no one agreed.

I think most people on here think that ancient Greeks had a higher Nordic component, and it has been bred out.

My avatar is Gelon, a Sicilian tyrant whose ancestry came from Telos, an Aegean island near Turkey.

I think if you take the idea that modern Greeks are more Near Eastern, it has to be due to the population exchange with Turkey in the early 1900s. But since southern Italians are still more "Near Eastern" genetically than most Greeks, the ancient Greeks must have been even less so, which means southern Italian ancestry cannot be pure Greek.

Obviously Southern Italian ancestry is not pure Greek. Quite a bit of it probably is but certainly not all.

Southern Italians are closer to Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews, and to Greek islanders, than anyone else. Mainland Greeks cluster in their own place, further north.

In ancient times, less Middle Eastern, more Indo-European.

Southern Italians are composed mainly of Neolithic, Greek and Italic ancestry with smaller amounts of Germanic and Norman thrown in.
