Ok, you got me. On a serious note though, it's inhospitable for white people. Aborigines existed here fine for 50,000 years. The biggest "problem" we're having at the moment with Aus immigration is asylum seeker arrivals being blown out of proportion. Aussies don't give a shit about the wealthy immigrants that come here by plane and clog up inner Sydney and Melbourne, they're only worried about the ones who want refugee status that turn up on boats from Iraq. If they're coming from a pile of rubble in the middle of the desert, I don't think they'd mind going back to the desert if there were a) jobs (yup), b) shelter (yup), c) water (yup).

For an arid country, we've got a lot of pure, easily accessible underground water.

Everyone gets this one wrong. There's the same misbelief here regarding the torrent of Syrians we're getting recently - they't be happy to be settled in the country and take up agriculture for a living they say...
