The petition reads...
To: Leicester City Council.
In an age which acknowledges the vital role played by women throughout our history, it is only right that the ‘Lady of the Mercians’, King Alfred’s warrior daughter Aethelflaeda should be formally commemorated with a statue made in her honour.
She was born in troubled, violent times in which England itself was threatened by Danish invasion and the subjugation of the English people of Mercia including those living in the ancient town of Leicester.
Not only did this female warrior leader stop the advance of the Danes in this militarily strategic area, she crushed them in a series of battles and drove them out as a defeated, humiliated enemy.
Aethelflaeda was a spirited passionate Englishwoman and is as important to English people as Joan of Arc is to the French, and for similar reasons.
She lived in an age in which her people were under immense pressure to simply survive as a nation, she inspired her warriors and led them by example, and together through sacrifice they reclaimed their ancestral land.
Leicester, a town known to Aethelflaeda, lies at the heartland of Mercia, and the ‘Lady of the Mercians’ shows us that stubborn resistance against all odds will secure victory in the end. We must have a statue worthy of Leicester’s history and it’s most famous lady. There is nobody more worthy than Aethelflaeda - ‘Lady of the Mercians’
We support a statue of the 'Lady of the Mercians' to be erected in Leicester - Mercia - England.
