POLICE officers in America regularly face questions about racism within law enforcement and now it seems their dogs may be at fault too.

A report on the Canine Special Detail of Los Angeles' Sheriff's Department (LASD) has revealed a dramatic rise in the number of ethnic minority individuals to be bitten by police pooches since 2004.

In the first six months of 2013 every single victim of a bite from a LASD dog was either African-American or Latino.

Records indicate the number of Latino bite victims has risen 30 per cent between 2004 and 2012 while the number of African-American's suffering a bite has gone up by 33 per cent.

During the period covered in the report, the largely black areas of Century, City of Industry, Compton, Lakewood and South LA saw more dog bites than all of the LASD's other districts combined.

This is not the first occasion where police dogs have been accused of targeting specific ethnic groups.

In 2004 a Pennsylvania police dog called Dolpho was suspended from duty for displaying a desire to bite black children.

you can teach dogs to bit certain ethnic groups though, there might be the racism

Dogs are not racists but the people who train them to be so. Dog can not be racist for it does not know anything and only follows the commands and cues given to it through the acts of conditioning. So it can be true that trained dogs often bite and attack minorities because they are trained.

Dogs actually become "racist" by default, if they aren't exposed to the sights, sounds, and smells of "others". I saw how it happened, going back to my childhood, and how my pit bulls reacted to strangers of another race.

Probably around 8 or 9 years ago, my Siberian Husky dug out under the fence from out back yard. She crossed a major street and ran around in the neighborhood, until she found some white people in a majority black neighborhood. They then called me base on the phone number on her ID tag, and I went and picked her up. We had no idea she was gone until we got the phone call.

why would a dog like to bite black children are dogs and blacks naturally enemies? there is certainly human conditioning behind it, i dont know how they train them but it is possible, dogs are intelligent and can do many things. also a dog could be instructed by his supervisor to bite a latino or black

It can smell the lack of privilege on the suspect, its lack of perceived whiteness.

It needs to be correct, otherwise dogs need to speak Spanish in order to identify self-identified Latinos.
