There is an old art called candas which is the proper method of reciting chants. Chants must adhere to certain metres, of which the Gayatri is the most famous. Popular folk song-hymns called bhajans have departed from this, thus diminishing their quality as pieces of music.
The best way to memorize verses in Hindu holy books in the Sanskrit is to apply the metre while reciting.
