Yes but it's not really about sadistic tendencies, dolphins for example have no concept of right and wrong, only good and bad to some extent, for their own survival or their clan. Seeing an isolated female dolphin just signal to them they can have their ways even if not necessarily for reproduction (they do it for days) but only lust, and play to death with other species as they find it amusing. Death or pain is neutral to them as long as it doesn't concern them. A higher level of intelligence enables that new layer of lust and amusement most other species won't posess, yet it is still not enough to get a grasp of more complex emotions beyond that. We try to imagine very similar emotions to ours in animals that they don't have, even if they sometimes really look like it and we would love to believe they have them.
Humans have more developped feelings and thoughts, we could also rape every women we want, but we don't because it's not appealing emotionally (for most of us), even if there was no laws against it.
